Between 1989 and 1994 the locomotives of the E444 group were upgraded by replacing the driving cobs and improving other technical parts. The new group of locomotives is the E444R where the "R" is upgraded "Riqualificate" on italian.
- The E444-005 in the original jet since 1975 had been transformed into prototype for testing new electronic solutions that will be used on the E632 and E633. During the upgrading the large side grilles were removed and in 1996 it was the first to be colored with XMPR livery although with some inverted colors.
- E444-020 / 040 with XMPR 1 livery
- E444-023 / 077/102 with XMPR 2 livery (077 with Trenitalia logo since 2008)
- E444-053 / 063 in original livery: red, black and gray
- E444-089 / 100 in ESCI livery
Since 2010,have started the launching and demolition operations of this group of locomotives.
