Als Ersatz für ältere Fahrzeuge beschafft die BLS AG zur Zeit 58 neue Fahrzeuge des Typs Flirt4 bei Stadlerrail. Seit Mitte 2021 sind die ersten Züge in der Variante "RegioExpress" im Einsatz.

Seit März 2022 sind die ersten Züge der Variante S-Bahn, mit doppelt so vielen Türen, auf Testfahrten anzutreffen.
